Okay so here’s my analysis on the situation in collaboration with others…
When deciding on where to commit, Cecil Newton wanted his son to go to a place where he had a shot to win championships without having to carry the entire team and run the ball every play. He was looking for a place that had surrounding talent, i.e. a veteran offensive line that would protect his son. He also wanted his son to attend a school with a family environment, where they would look after his well being on and off the field. All of those attributes are something he was looking for in excess of a scholarship, which is where we get the excerpted quote when Cecil talked to Miss St. saying “Its going to take more than a scholarship”. Basically explaining to Miss. St that they needed to sell him on Miss St. not the fact that he was going to get a scholarship. Much the way Chizik has devoted his time to “selling Auburn” which is what parents and recruits want to hear. 
The scholarship is a given, parents want to know why your school is the best school for my son. After hearing the “more than a scholarship” quote Miss St. countered with an offer of $180,000. Cecil decided he didn’t want his son to go to a place that would offer money to his son, especially after everything his son had gone through, he wanted him to go to a place that would help a young man grow and have a positive influence on his character (which is what Chizik and his staff have been preaching since day 1). So Cecil had final say and chose Auburn, when Cam talked to the Miss St. recruiter he told the recruiter that “the money was too much” meaning Miss St shouldn’t have offered the money, that’s the biggest reason his dad chose Auburn. After choosing Auburn, Cecil Newton stated the following:
“We both decided what to do a few days before we went to Gene Chizik, but Cam was apprehensive,” the father told the Advertiser. “He was leaning toward Starkville. He had that relationship with Dan Mullen and there was a comfort level there.
“I didn’t think that was the right place for Cam. They just don’t have all the moving parts. Cam was going to have to be the star. He’d have to do everything himself. I didn’t want him to be a rented mule.
What’s funny about the two excerpted quotes from ESPN: “the money was too much” and “it’s going to take more than a scholarship”. If ESPN had those quotes, why didn’t they quote the entire sentence? Because in this case the truth doesn’t sell, controversy implicating the Heisman trophy winner, and the #2 team in the nation is much more of an eye catcher and will have viewers glued to their seat waiting on an ESPN update.
What’s really amazing to me is that my story makes just as much sense, if not more sense than the espn quotes and yet these guys get to get on sportscenter and implicate Auburn, I should start a petition to put Justin Lambert on sportscenter. While I do believe in freedom of the press, I also believe in responsible journalism.
But most of all, I believe in Auburn, and LOVE IT!!!!
